Florida’s Joey Polk felt a peculiarly strong tug on his line when he was fishing off the Florida Panhandle earlier this month.

That pull turned out to be an 11-foot, 805-pound mako shark.

Polk and the creature became embroiled in a furious tug of war that lasted over an hour.

The 29-year-old father-of-three eventually caught the shark, but had no intention of keeping it as a prize.

“We tried to revive the fish and send him back out, but he was too worn out to swim. That’s why we decided to keep him. We don’t do it for the money, for the publicity, just to catch the fish,” the Milton, Florida resident told The New York Daily News.
It’s a good thing Polk didn’t toss the fish back in because he soon found out it was the largest mako ever caught.

And what’s the best thing to do with such an incredible catch?

Polk stuffed the giant shark in the back of his pick-up truck and took it home to eat, a decision that most certainly paid off.

“It was really good. It’s not real fishy. It does not have a real gamy, fishy taste,” he said.
Joey Polk also holds the record for the largest tiger shark ever caught, according to the Daily News.

He said that the mako, however, is his proudest fishing achievement.

“They are not supposed to be here. They are open water fish and tend to stay in cold deeper waters,” Polk said.
The previous record was held by Joey’s cousin, Earnie Polk, who was there to help Joey fight the fish.
